After mixed reviews for and against staying at the Sahara, DH and I decided to take a chance. DH forgot to try the $20.00 trick at checkin. Original room was pretty bad. Huge black stains on the carpet, old t.v. which did not work, torn wallpaper. Let's just say the room had definately seen better days. Quick trip back to the desk and we were able to change rooms. Got remodeled ones which were nothing fancy but, fine for our needs. This was a first trip for my mother who wanted to see what Vegas was like. We took her on a tour of the stip to see the hotels which impressed her. We also took her to see Big Elvis, Rick Thomas, The Comedy Stop, Titanic Exhibition and The Rat Pack - Shadows in the Desert. I got half price tickets for the Rick Thomas and Rat Pack shows and tipped the doorman for front row center. DH and I had seen Rick Thomas before but, it's a good show and was worth seeing again. I cannot say enough about the Rat Pack show at the Sahara. DH and I only got tickets because we thought my mother would enjoy it. If not for that, we probably would have never seen it and missed a great show. We all loved it and the performers were fabulous. The fellow who does Sammy Davis Jr. is incrediable. See it if you get the chance. Won a little, lost a little and pretty much broke even. The best thing about the Sahara is the pool. Not crowded at all. DH and I rented a float for $10, ordered a couple of cool drinks and just chilled for a few hours which was relaxing. The Sahara has closed a showroom and the buffet is gone. Other services seem to have been reduced. Cafe hours decreased, pool bar hours shortened etc. Seems the place is really struggling. I probably would not stay at the Sahara again but, I am glad I got to stay there once just for the history of the place.

i really like your last sentence.... too many people pass on things, and then, poof, they're gone.

I always thought I'd see Sigfried and Roy "next trip", but it never happened. Sounds like you had fun.

Nice trip. Bummer that the Sahara seems to be struggling.

Great trip report. I love the thought of you floating in the non-crowded pool with your tropical drinks, just chillin'.

The shows sound very entertaining. I would love to see the Rat Pack.

Sorry to read about the decline of the Sahara. I guess we all have to face the fact that "old" Vegas is pretty much gone.

On the whole, it sounds like a classic excellent Vegas vacation!

Wonder how much of the cast is the same in that Rat Pack show as when we saw it there in 2002 (I think?). It left the Sahara, went to the Greek Isles and other parts way way off strip. Glad it's back on the Strip! Great show when we went too. I actually always make a trip to teh Sahara when I am in Vegas. A little flavor of old school without going downtown and relatively cheap gambling. Last there a few years ago played some $3 craps (decent odds too) and $2 Blackjack. That is where I hot my Royal also!

I liked your report. Glad your Mom liked the tour of the strip. You saw some good shows. I to like to gamble, eat and hit shows.... variety. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/7.gif)

Thanks for taking the time to write it up.

I agree about the old places. Soon they will all be gone.
I still think about my late night craps sessions at the Stardust.
Glad that you had a great trip. Thanks for sharring it with us
