From the Back Office, a Casino Can Change the Slot Machine in Seconds

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/04/12/technolo...;pagewanted=all

LAS VEGAS, April 6 — From his small back office in the Treasure Island casino, Justin Beltram may soon be able to change the wheels of fortune instantly.

Mr. Beltram, a casino executive, is the point man in a high-technology experiment that could alter the face of slot machines, and their insides, too.

With a few clicks of his computer mouse, Mr. Beltram can reprogram the 1,790 slot machines on the casino floor, adjusting the denominations required to play, payback percentages, even game themes.

Anyone notice the date on the article? I wonder if it's still in effect now and has been expanded.

OMG, that does suck. Seems like there could be some big problems w/someone having that much control in an instant.

The funny thing is, for the longest time I thought the casinos had been able to do this for years! Whenever I sat at a slot or a VP machine and hit a dry spell I'd always think 'OK who hit a button somewhere...' laugh.gif Silly me...

So did my sister in law. She would only play slots at night because, "They set them to pay off better at night."

That may not have been the case then but it sure looks to be true now-a-days.

You know, I always thought they could do this now unsure.gif...Anyway, anytime you have software controlling percentages for "random" out comes I've NEVER felt the machines were honest. Sorry, I've seen to many software applications in other industries that have the ability to work things in favor of the company. Slots, VP, video BJ, it's all "fixed" out comes based on percentages casinos need to satisfy the state, I don't trust them for shit.

Won't stop me from throwing a buck or 3 in from time to time. ohmy.gif

This would open the door for casinos to cheat customers by quickly reducing the payout on slots which are getting a lot of action.
They can increase the payout on slots that are not in heavy use and still maintain their overall average payout percentage of say 92%.
I think casinos should be required to clearly post the payout precentage of their slots.
If this ability to change payouts is handed over to the casinos then the NGC must retain strict controls and guidelines. smokin.gif
