Pretty fucking awesome.
I don't really know much about the sport but you can tell that
Shaun White is the King of it.
Pimpbot
Agreed. I mixed feelings on snowboarding being an olympic event, especially a gloryfied skateboard type half pipe, but Shaun White is the class of the field. On second thoughts, I guess it's no worse than a bunch of fugly eastern europeans prancing around on ice skates to music.
Brian707
Snowboarding belongs in the X games not Olympics. Its only there to pad the US medal totals.

That being said I wonder how many bongs Shaun and his pals smoked last night?

Curling is where its at

NativeSoCal
I like how the Canadians were talking some strong pre-Olmpics smack, about how they, as hosts, were gonna lead the medal race.

Medal standings so far...

USA - 14
Germany - 10
France - 7
Canada - 6

At least those women know how to work a broom or a mop. wink.gif

It's not a sport if you can do it while you are drinking a beer.

You midwest homos who have never ridden a skateboard crack me up!

Quit bagging on the snowboarders!
Bobster
I was riding a skateboard before you were even born Junior.
NativeSoCal
Riding on an old hunk of 2x4 with old metal skate wheels nailed to the underside isn't what I call ridin' a skateboard, grampa! laugh.gif

SoCal, was, is, and always will be the hotbed of skateboard innovation.

Brian707
And I was in HS in the 90's we had quite a bid of good skateboarders. That werent how you described
Sco
Goddam punkass amateurs, THIS is where it was at.......with no fookin' pussyass helmets or shin/elbow guards!

Bobster
When I got my first skateboard in the mid 60's every kid in the neighborhood
came by to check it out and try to ride it.
You are right though, it was steel wheels. I think they had clay ones too.
Mine was a Mako Shark and I wish I would have kept it.
My nephew would have a blast riding it up at the skate park.
The kid is nuts about skating and he has all types of boards.
Probably not as cool as those LA guys though.

yeah i got mine about that time also.

no steel wheels... clay?

used to ride it down this long hill(in the street) that we lived on. yeah no elbow pads, knee pads, helmet, etc.

other than a few road burns and a few bruises, i lived

the one thing about those early wheels, once in a while a pebble or stick would lock the wheels and then it was all asses and elbows
Area51
Did y'all catch the "F" bombs being dropped by Shaun's coach after he hit that 48 score? It was live so they couldn't delete the broadcast in time.. The announcers did apologize for the language.. It was funny as hell..

For some reason I am just really enjoying the Curling competitions, but the US Women's team is really struggling.

The Women's Downhill was incredible.. Lindsey Vonn.. That is one gutsy gal..

Men's Figure Skating .. Well what can you say.. ? Johnny Weir backed down on the fur.. Having said that, that is probably as close to "Fur" as that boy is gonna get..
Pimpbot
Live? you mean NBC have shown an event live this olympics? wow I've had nothing but tape delay in this timezone.

You took the first shot by classifying all the snowboarders as pot smokers.

You opened the can of worms, not me.

So, just what does a midwest bumpkin like you know about skateboarding/snowboarding anyway?

You're still snowed in for another month or two, stuck inside knitting doilies while us West Coasters are hangin' at the beach! tongue.gif cool.gif

No, I took a shot at you. Period. Quit being so wishy-washy, Brian. You've been playing this game for a long time.

PS - There isn't a chance in hell that you've skateboarded, surfed, or skiied more than me.

Now, its possible you may have snowboarded more than me, if you've done that.

I did it a couple of times, and didn't enjoy it as much as skiing.
Zuke
You can think whatever you want.... but I was a skateboarding maniac all throughout my pre-teens and early teens. We had jumps, ramps and skated all over the fucking place.

My wife and I practically did all our early dating on snow skis.

We still sneak in some skiing now and again throughout our marriage (been a couple years - but we shall return!).

Never tried surfing on water or snow for that matter. But I have water skiied a lot. Had just worked up from two skis to a single slalom and tried barefooting once. I'd love to get out and do that again!

NativeSoCal
So where do you Illinois guys go to snow ski?
Zuke
Dude, it's winter and snow here half the year! Of course we have places to ski!!!!! laugh.gif

If your question is legit and you're not just waiting to spring the "that's just a gay little bump/hill {insert insult here}" setup (!), there are LOTS of places around here, in Wisconsin, Upper MI, etc. All within a few hours drive. Essentially, your daily commute! laugh.gif

Chestnut Mtn in Galena, IL is where Kel and I have skiied most. Love it there. NO it's nothing like what you have in CA, but it's scenic (base is on the Mississippi river - skiing as the sunsets on the river is INSANELY beautiful) and well managed and easy to get to (2 and 1/2 hour drive). My favorite and where I'll be taking Joe next year to learn how to ski:

http://www.chestnutmtn.com/

Also, skiied Boyne in MI, Iron Mountain, Devil's Head and Indian Head in the U.P. ("the you-pers") - Upper MI for the uninformed.

http://www.indianheadmtn.com/photo_gallery.php

We also have a practice hill called Villa Oliva that's less then an hour. Mostly for kids and like I said, practice. I learned to ski at Sundown Mountain (it's more a of a valley IMO), in Iowa: http://www.sundownmtn.com/

Not sure if it's around anymore, but Wilmont and Alpine Valley are also nearby popular ski "hills" that we can get to in just over an hour. I did those probably once or twice when I was 21 I think?

NativeSoCal
Of course it was a legitimate question.

I've been to Illinois, I've been to Michigan, the U.P., etc.

I know you get snow. rolleyes.gif I jus don't remember seeing any legitimate mountainous areas that would yield decent skiing.

Thank you for providing the links. I enjoyed looking at them, and it gave me some insight to your areas. smile.gif

Ok, I know it's all you've got, and I respect that you guys go there. 7.gif

Please don't take this wrong...

But, upon looking at that Chestnut Mt website, and reading that they have a monstrous 475 foot vertical drop, I actually laughed out loud enough that people came running to my office to see what ws going on! laugh.gif
Bobster
Wilmot and Alpine are stll there.
Cascade up by the Dells was always decent.

When I was a kid we had a place in town that had some small hills with
tow ropes. Fox Trails. They closed it and turned the lodge into a blues and folk nightclub.
Muddy Waters recorded part of his live album there. It was called Harry Hopes.

There was also Buffalo Park in Algonquin that is now a
snowboarding place.
Zuke
Well, since you've seen our fair state, then you'll know why a claim of a 475 foot drop would be a good marketing point to us flatlanders!

Like I said, nothing like Colorado or Cali, but still lots of skiing to be had. It's not always about the long-ass runs you guys have. There is steepness and sufficient enough speeds can be attained. Scenery, comfort, grooming/maintenance and ease (getting to and fro) goes a long way for my skiing wants too. smile.gif

Chestnut has the best of the things I look for.

IF I was nearby Big Bear or in Colorado, well, hell yes... I'd laugh at Chestnut too!

But I can come out there or you can come out there, and I'll betcha a case of your favorite brew I'd dust ya on the slopes. My knees work fine. wink.gif

Hey, I can count on one hand the times that I've skiied without drinking some form of alcohol.

Heck we used to fill our bota bags with 100 proof Schnapps.
Pimpbot
Skateboarding is for losers wink.gif BMX was where it's at. My brother built a 8ft quarter pipe in our back garden and then built a 12 ft half pipe on the grass next to our parents house. We use to race as well and won a couple of trophies, although I was only like 11 at the time, so I pretty much sucked at it. laugh.gif

Zuke
I had two, my plastic piece of crap I learned on, then a tricked out giant wooden one with LOTS of stickers on it. Man, I rode that thing everywhere!! It was practically attached to my feet. Good times!!
signboy
i,ve raced mountain bikes down chestnut & indianhead, and mammoth & big bear, but never been to any of them in the winter, and i tell you what, the downhill mtb race at mammoth and big bear were wide fast fire/dirt road marathons while chestnut's downhill was across some grassy runs through some gnarly singletrack through the trees between runs, much more challenging, albeit shorter.

the only two places i've ever snowboarded were lutsen mountain (lutsen.com) 2 hours from my house up lake superior (800-1000 ft runs) and spirit mountain (spiritmt.com) (700 ft runs) whose base parking lot is a block from my house.
Bobster
My nephew must have 6 or 8 complete and
like a bunch of boards that have the graphics all chewed up on them.
He is constantly changing the trucks and wheels.
I bought him a board deck for Chrismas that was like $40 and
it's trashed already.

Just some comments from the whole thread...

Brian, what sport can't you drink beer while doing? I'm not saying "doing well" mind you.

Saw a guy at the store today buying a skateboard for the Wii for his 2 year old.

We can fly to Utah to ski in a shorter time period than Native's commute!

I didn't think that Shaun White was dissing the US while playing air guitar. Just because it's an inappropriate war song to have as a national anthem shouldn't mean that someone can't enjoy it.

Disclaimer: I've never been downhill skiing, skateboarding or snowboarding. I was pretty good on the pogo stick when I was a kid though. Can that become an olympic event too?
