Full Version: Fees for carry ons?

Saw where an airline called Spirit is going to start to charge for carry on luggage that does not fit under the seat. $30.00 in advance, $45.00 at the gate. So will all the airlines now do this? I agree that some folks bring luggage on the plane which should be in the belly of the plane, but in a way the airlines have forced people into this practice.
Luggage should be free like it used to be. Nice thing about Southwest. At least for now you can have 1 luggage free, plus a carry-on, plus a purse.

Guess Spirit has some cheap fares. Flies out of Florida. Anyone ever fly them?

I read that, too. Spirit also said they were dropping ticket prices by $40 and thought that would better enable people to choose what services they wanted.

IMO, that is a load of crap. I would bet that less than 1% of people travel without (at least) a carry-on. They only thing you can bring on the plane free must fit under the seat.

It is a pretty sure thing that all airlines will do this at some point in the future, except that they won't lower prices. The only advantage to a carry on is that you don't have to wait for it after the flight.

What the airlines need to do is just come out and say that they've found a new way to stick it to you, and if you don't like it, too f'n bad.

The business traveler will not put up with a stupid thing like this.
Spirt is mainly vacation business so who can tell what people will do
to get a lower price without checking all the details.
Southwest should have fun with this now.

I really hope that they've finally gone to far and they lose flying customers. It seems like people have been willing to put up with all the changes so far.

RyanAir over here is charging 1 Euro for the bathroom during flight. I've still refused to fly with them up to this point.

I think SouthWest or JetBlue already took a shot at them with a commerical where one of the passengers was wearing a suitcase (sort of like a vest). Was pretty humourous.

The frequent business flyer (the real money makers for airlines) usually do not feel the effects of these cost hikes. Their frequent flyer status will usually get them out of the fees. and if you notice they are generally the ones who the extra and oversized luggage as carry-ons. Who it effects is the occasional traveler and vacation travelers.

Just booked flights on Air Tran to go to DC with my wife and they really stick to you if you want preassigned seats and sit together. plus the luggage charges we will incur.

I have been looking for 6 monts for fares to FLL or MIA in Oct for our cruise, it plain sucks. The nearest place to catch Southwest is 3 hrs to Chicago, then I have to pay for gas and parking!

I saw some of the carryon luggage this past trip and it was ridiculous.
One lady couldn't lift it into the bin it was so heavy and needed help.
Others were jamming their carryon into bins far from where they were seating since the bins fill up so fast.
We travel with one suitcase and no carryon which does us just fine. smokin.gif

that pisses me off when people put their luggage in the first available spot. then when i get on there is no room above my seats. i do not like doing the hurry up and wait thing when getting on planes, unless I am traveling with the kids. l

Really, Chmie,

If you packed more than one pair of underwear and one pair of socks for your week in Vegas, you might need a carry on as well. wink.gif laugh.gif

Seriously, I agree. I see people bring bigger and bigger carry ons all the time.

It really irks me when they try cramming those humongous bags into the overhead storage. Almost every flight I've taken lately, they end up having to check carry ons when the plane is only about 3/4 full of people, but the overhead bins are full. That makes for some irritated passengers!

When I am put in charge, which is long overdue I might add,
The only carry ons allowed will be what fits under the seat.
A purse, small bag or a laptop. Over heads will be for coats only.
All luggage will be checked in the bottom of the plane.
I will then make sure the baggage is secure an that it would be
available in a timely fashion. This will be for safety and should reduce the
security check line.

Another endorsement for riding Amtrak, IMO.

I heard today that the same airline (Spirit) was replacing their reclining seats with seats that don't recline because they weigh less. Too lazy to find a link but you can look it up if you care.

Why don't they just take the seats out and let the passengers stand and hold their carry-on bags? That would weigh even less.
